I have long wanted to do some serious research into the dressmakers of Britain and the US in the late 19th century and early 20th. I am really fascinated to learn about the women who ran these businesses. I picked up an interesting book at RISD in Providence, Rhode Island, called From Paris to Providence. It's about the Tirrochi sisters, dressmakers in Providence from 1911 to the late 30's. I've only just begun to read it, but I am really interested to learn more about these lesser-known creative women (and men) who were creating the outfits for those not fortunate or rich enough to patronize the Paris couturiers.
I shall report more fully in the next few months, I promise! There are a couple of books I'm trying to get my hands on, to learn more. I am particularly hoping to eventually track down a dressmaker or two, other than Mrs. Nettleship and Alice Comyns-Carr who were actually making aesthetic dress.
Hopefully, I can find some good info somewhere.
